Three biggest Denver Engagement Photo Mistakes

Not to brag, but my couples are smart. While they value tradition and a classic aesthetic, they’re not going to just follow tradition for tradition’s sake. Maybe that’s why I like them as an artistic Denver wedding photographer – on and off duty! 😊

One area where I get lots of questions? Engagement photos. Are engagement photos necessary? What should I wear? Will it be awkward? (Nope, but you still might want them. Yep, but only sometimes.)

So for today’s blog, I thought I’d share the biggest engagement photo mistakes. Keep reading!

Denver Engagement Photo Mistakes

This amazing couple made NONE of these mistakes!eldorado canyon engagement photos

Denver Engagement Photo Mistake #1: We don’t need them.

Look, I’m not one for pressuring my clients. I believe you know your budget and your needs best. I’m simply your personal expert consultant.

And here’s the thing – engagement photos aren’t necessary. That’s not what engagement photos (or weddings for that matter) are about, right?

It’s about celebrating. It’s about treating yourself. Weddings and engagement photos are about honoring what just may be the most important, most exciting decision of your life.

I can’t say for sure whether engagement photos are right for you. But I do know the happiness and joy engagement photos have brought my clients in the past. I would hate for you to miss that!

Denver Engagement Photo Mistake #2: I know we should plan our wardrobe, but I don’t know where to start…so whatever.

As women, we get pretty good at picking the right clothes for the occasion. We gotta nail that casual but cute look for hanging out. That professional but accessible look for work. That little extra cute look for date night.

But engagement photos?! How much practice do you have picking out clothes for that occasion? Likely answer – none.

It can get a little overwhelming. But don’t worry, and don’t just shrug your shoulders and move on. Your photographer should be able to help you! In fact, just about every photographer on planet earth has written a blog post about it.

Denver Engagement Photo Mistake #3: This is too weird, I can’t get into it!

I know, I know. It’s weird! Unless you moonlight as a model, there’s no getting how weird it can be. Try as best as you can to acknowledge the weirdness and move on. Listen to your photographer’s prompts and instructions, but focus on your fiancé. Keep thinking about how exciting this time in your lives is. Your engagement is a beautiful but fleeting transition stage in your relationship, and you’re doing something wonderful by honoring this time with a photo shoot.

I just can’t overstate how important it is to trust your photographer. Most people feel weird in front of a camera – PERIOD! So being in front of a camera while snuggling, flirting, and showing PDA with your fiancé? It makes sense that would only make you feel weirder.

But your photographer will select the most flattering, fun images. So you don’t have to worry about awkward blinks or weird, in-between facial expressions. You can just focus on enjoying the moment.

The more you focus on how awkward you feel, the more that’ll show up in your photos. Trust, breathe, and have some fun!

I literally cry when I hear, “we don’t need them”. Me and my hubby didn’t have the opportunity for engagement portraits and that still saddens me to this day. As silly as this sounds- I cannot believe there aren’t enough stories like mine floating around that educate people to have engagement photos done! It just seems like a no brainer to me. All of these are great tips!
