Maybe you saw my post about my more general New Year’s “resolution” or mantra. If not, you can check it out here. But one of my more specific New Year’s resolutions as an artistic Colorado wedding photographer has been to cut back on screen time – especially before bed. Can I just say how tough it is?! I sometimes feel like I am going through screen withdrawal.
Most of the effects are wonderful and totally worth it overall, but there are some downsides. For example, I’ve become an Audible lover, so I’ve been listening to some of my books. But, during ‘no phone’ time, that means I can’t listen to my books, either.
I know what you’re thinking: Make an exception! Say no screens except for Audible. Well, that’s not happening, sister. Here’s the thing – I don’t trust myself to look away when I hear that little text or email dinging. I don’t trust myself not to wander into Instagram as I’m “picking which book I’m going to listen to.” As an artistic Colorado wedding photographer, It’s my favorite social media platform. So, I’m strict about it!
What this means is I’ve just been reading whatever books are handy. Many of which I’ve read before. So as of now, I’m re-reading two books:
Where’d you go, Bernadette? By Maria Semple
And
Bossypants By Tina Fey
And these are two gems, let me tell ya!
Bernadette just may be a perfect novel. It’s mostly light and very funny (the author used to write for Arrested Development…so, ya know, mic drop!), but it has such a depth to it. I hate when people spoil things for me, so I won’t say much more. But it’s so worth picking up 😊
Bonus: someone on Instagram told me they’re making this into a movie! I just about lost it. But it’s true – the movie is coming out this year and stars Cate Blanchett.
Bossypants is another good one. It’s just so funny. I crack up while I’m reading, which I think is a mood killer for my husband who tends to read very serious books. He’ll be fine, though 😊
It’s basically Tina Fey telling her life story with LOTS of jokes. If you’re a big 30 Rock fan like I am, you’ll especially love it. You can see where some of the jokes came from, and she talks about a lot of behind the scenes stuff from the show. Also, there are childhood photos of her bad haircuts.
Do you ever re-read books? Or are you done when you’re done?

It’s SO hard to avoid a screen before bed. Literally on my phone right before bed now. Oops. I haven’t heard of either of these books! I stink at keeping up with anything other that business books. Double oops.
