I’m so accustomed to creating photos for the Hilltop Sundial, it was a little stunning and exciting to be on the other side of things

The wonderful people behind the Sundial allowed me to write a bit about my business. As I’m launching my new logo and website, I thought it might be nice to share with all you in blog world. 🙂

Hi! I am Melissa Hirsch, the creator of nearly every cover image for the Hilltop Sundial since the magazine’s very first issue.

Hopefully, an image or two has spoken to you over the years. Whether it’s the posing, lighting, expressions, or more likely the lovely faces of your neighbors that has drawn you in, it’s my pleasure to create completely unique photographs for everyone who sits in front of my camera.

You may not know this, but I’m currently booking families for 2017, and I’d be honored to photograph your family, too.

With the support of so many wonderful Hilltop families, I’m thrilled to announce some big changes for Melissa Hirsch Photography.

New products, new prices, and a new business structure mean next-level customer service and heirloom prints, books, and boxes that you will cherish – and enjoy the way photographs ought to be enjoyed. In real life.

Session fees start low, at only 200.00, and there is no requirement to purchase a single photo or product until you see it.

This is how strongly I believe that you should love every photo you own – not kind of like 250 that will sit on your hard drive and live in the land of zeros and ones until it’s time to choose a holiday card!

There’s a word at the center of these changes. It’s a little strange, but it’s become central to my business and my life. It’s a Portuguese word: saudade (pronounced sow-dud-jay).

As defined by Nina George in The Little Paris Bookshop, saudade is “a yearning for one’s childhood, when the days would merge into one another and the passing of time was of no consequence. It is the sense of being loved…It is a unique experience of abandon. It is everything that words cannot capture.”

If I’ve done my job, your photographs will make you feel that bittersweet saudade about your family, your wedding, and even an event you’re planning!

Thank you so much for the privilege of getting to know and photographing so many of you. I hope to meet more of you in the upcoming year!

P.S. I’d be so thrilled if you’d like to learn more. You can visit my website at, find me on Facebook (Melissa Hirsch Photography), or check out my Instagram account @melissahirschphoto.
